This scene from DOTD(2004) is from the opening credits, it shows people praying in a mosque, this suggests that zombies have come from the Middle East and are fundamentally linked to the Al-Qaeda. This would have been even scarier to the audience in 2004 due to the historical context, after all the terrorist bombings such as 9/11 (in 2001) and the London bombing (in 2004). Terrorism is a very scary thing, and zombies coming from this area would be very scary to the audience. This links to Janet Staiger’s theory of audience studies, she states that ‘different audiences watch films with polysemy depending upon that audience’s context.’ And this is very true with this film, for example changing the context of this film from the 70’s version is what has made it much scarier for audiences in the 00’s.
