Your mark (after viewing): 8/10
What happened in the trailer?
Collision cutting is used in the first scene; this makes the audience aware of the trailer and more intrigued to watch the rest of the trailer. Text then appears on the screen to help tell the narrative, although the majority of the narrative is told through the old man that is a prisoner in the local jail. The audience is lead to believe/told that the ‘things’ that are killing the people are vampires as we are told that they ‘suck blood’ and are ‘cold blooded’. This is a typical highlights trailer that selects the most violent and gory shots from the film to create fast paced trailer.
Which positive, clever or interesting aspects do you think you could include in your own trailer? What generic features are fulfilled well?
The jumpy moments - especially right at the start work really well as it makes you jump to introduce the story it ‘wakes you up’ in a way and then there is a slow build towards the quick ending.
The music is exciting and is faster when editing is fast so all elements of the trailer are in sync with each other.
The trailer is really well paced throughout; this is a key aspect in any trailer.
Plot is explained nicely through the man in the prison cell.
The text on screen, classily gives us (the audience) the plot – the text is not too long, is easy to read and informative so no need for a voice over.
Canted angles, restricted narration, collision cutting these elements make this a powerful trailer that is a 15.
Brief glimpses of the vampires and implications of how brutal they are.
Which aspects of the trailer did you think were unsuccessful, and would put off its target audience? How is it disappointing?
I think that although the story/plot was explained nicely throughout the trailer, it maybe gave away a bit too much of the trailer, it also seemed like I was watching a scene from the film as opposed to watching a trailer.
What was the trailer’s average score in class? Why did it receive that mark?
8.5 overall, it was the best trailer out of the 3 shown, there are lots of horror features, it has nice pacing and a good concept/idea which would really help us to get high marks.
