Black Swan (2010) Solo Trailer Review

Genre:
Mystery/Thriller

Your Mark (After Viewing): 10/10

What happened in the trailer?
The majority of the narrative is told by the main character Nina Sayers, the audience is told from this that she is a dedicated dancer training to perform in the Swan Lake ballet. But it is twisted by what the audience to believe her personality changing as she thrives from the success of being involved in such a well known ballet. We (the audience) meet Nina's mother, dance teacher and rival in the ballet show as we follow her journey through the trailer, we realize that these four people are going to be the most important characters in the film. This is a typical highlights trailer, that tracks chronologically through the film.

Which positive, clever or interesting aspects do you think you could include in your own trailer? What generic features are fulfilled well?
I like how at the beginning of the trailer the narrative is told by Nina whilst she is talking to her mother, I think that this works really well as it sounds a lot more classy than cheesy, dramatic voice overs. The trailer tracks chronologically through the events in the film, showing highlights the pacing of the trailer works well as to begin with the trailer has slower, longer shots that keep in pace with the slow voice from the extra-diegetic voice over; the trailer then speeds up with quicker, shorter montage shots introduced with collision cutting from the extreme close up of Nina's foot and also the background music that takes over from the diegetic voice over which helps to speed up the pace of the trailer. The music also works well to create tension but also supports the more violent, dramatic scenes.
There is no need for text to help tell the narrative as it is told classily from the diegetic voice over at the beginning, and the shots used were chosen well with small hints of diegetic voices which subtly help to tell the narrative. Although there is no text on screen to tell the story, the credits are presented between shots of the trailer, I think that this works well as it does need something to break up the shots and this works well; I like how the background behind the text is black feathers from what I presume are swan feathers. I think that this works well as it still uses the classy white on black but makes it more original by adding the feathers in the background.
The mirror scene in the trailer, where Nina's reflection turns around adds mystery to the trailer, it makes the audience question why Nina's personality suddenly changes. I think that this is a really good effect that I could possibly reproduce something similar to help add that sense of mystery and 'freaky-ness' to my media product. I think adding to this element of mystery is the end shot of the trailer where we see Nina pull what looks like a small feather from her back and stares at it with red, evil eyes.

Which aspects of the trailer did you think were unsuccessful, and would put off its target audience? How is it disappointing?
I do not think that there is anything that I can fault this trailer with, I think that all of the elements from tell the genre to the editing work really well, and would really appeal to its audience. I think that if someone watched this trailer and didn't understand the hints given from the mirror shot in particular they might think that the majority of the narrative has been told from the trailer, but I think that most people would understand that from this shot there is a deeper narrative to be revealed when you watch the whole film.
