Abandoned (2010) Solo Trailer Review

Genre:
Thriller
Mark after viewing: 8/10

What happened in the trailer?
In the trailer we see a woman trying to find her boyfriend who supposedly goes missing during surgery. She is the led to believe by other characters that she is going crazy, after previously being treated mentally. But the whole experience turns out to be one big game and the audience nor the characters know who is on what 'team', this would intrigue the audience to watch the film to find out what happens.

Which positive, clever or interesting aspects do you think you could include in your own trailer? What generic features are fulfilled well?
The use of quick montage at the begging and in the middle of the trailer work really well, together with dramatic music as each shot appears on the screen, this will make the audience feel uncomfortable as they are watching and trying to keep up with the different shots. This is a feature that could work well in my media product as it is a good way of making the audience feeling uncomfortable without necessarily using gore to freak them out, also as this trailer is a thriller not much body horror is used I think that this still works well as it is more of an 'eerie' film and the audience is more interested in finding out what is actually happening, this is something that I wish to fulfil well in my media product.
The pacing of the trailer is very well, although slow in some parts this works well as it builds tension ready for the quick montage to make the audience feel really uncomfortable. Also a good clear font is used, which helps to tell the story line I think without this the audience may get a a little confused with what is happening in the trailer, this is something that I need to think about when making my media product as I want the audience to understand what is happening throughout the trailer, but still without giving too much away. This also means that there is not as much need for a voice over in this part of the trailer, which is another reason why I think I would like to use text to use explain my story as a voice over sometimes isn't 'classy' enough where as this text used is very classy and gets the message across fantastically.
Good music is used throughout the trailer, at the beginning the music is quite eerie but dramatic and builds tension straight away and really captures the audiences attention and then a quiet eerie music is used throughout the trailer which is subliminally creating tension for the audience. I think that music is a really important feature in a horror trailer as although this music is not loud or over-powering it is still there and I think it works really well in creating underlying tension, which is a n aspect that I would like to include in my media product.
There is also a good use of shots to make the audience feel uncomfortable, such as close ups of the woman's face as she holds a gun near her face the audience is worried she is going to kill her self maybe as she seems fairly weary at this point in the trailer, also there is the use of canted angles as we see her boyfriend again with the man that came into her hospital room. these two scenes are a good example of shots that are used to make the audience feel uncomfortable, I would like to include shots like these in my own trailer as I feel that they are very powerful.

Which aspects of the trailer did you think were unsuccessful and would put off its audience? How is it disappointing?
Although the story is told very well throughout the trailer, I think that almost too much is told. It almost seems like we have watched the majority of the film in the trailer, although they do try and mix it up a bit by not letting the audience know who is on what side in the 'game' which would intrigue the audience to watch the film to find out that little bit more.
